10 Days - pyrenees & northern Spain - The very best roads in Europe!
This is one tour we simply have to run every year.
Widely regarded as home to the finest driving roads in Europe, our 2027 tour of the Spanish Pyrenees offers 1,400 miles of smooth tarmac, with remarkably little traffic, few hazards, and zero potholes! The route winds through spectacular mountain passes, dramatic valleys, and rolling landscapes dotted with olive groves, where soaring eagles and vultures often outnumber people.
Travelling on Brittany Ferries’ renowned overnight service to and from northern Spain, we’ll also explore the historic Roman city of Segovia, stay in hand-picked luxury hotels, and enjoy the warm, dry sunshine that makes this extraordinary region one of Spain’s best-kept secrets.
Day 1 & 2, Friday 10th - Saturday 11th September 2027
We arrange to meet at Caffeine & Machine in Petersfield in Hampshire early evening on Friday.
After a bite to eat and a briefing we head the short distance to Portsmouth and embark onto Brittany Ferries’ late evening sailing to Santander, with comfortable, air-conditioned cabins with ensuites.
We have plenty of time to relax, socialise, get to know our fellow drivers and passengers, and enjoy the on board facilities, as we look forward to our arrival in Spain on Sunday morning.
Day 3, Sunday 12th September 2027
300 miles, 7 hours
We arrive in Santander after breakfast on Sunday, disembark and head east through the rugged Cantabrian Mountains, which run parallel to Spain’s northern coast and separate the green Atlantic-facing lowlands from the drier interior plateau.
Our destination is Huesca in the Aragonese Pyrenees and our hotel: a magnificent former international train station built in 1928.
We can look forward to a lovely dinner and evening together in this unique place.
Day 4, Monday 13th September 2027
150 miles, 5 hours
After breakfast we look forward to more of the fabulous roads east through the Pyrenees, including through the Ordesa y Monte Perido National Park which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
We climb deeper into the High Pyrenees – surrounded by soaring peaks – and to our hotel in Vielha.
We have plenty of time to relax in this beautiful location. The views of the Aran Valley are stunning.
We look forward to a lovely meal together this evening as we anticipate another excellent day tomorrow.
Day 5, Tuesday 14th September 2027
250 miles, 6.5 hours
Today we head south and then west over the Port de la Bonaigua mountain pass; with its 36 corners and 1:11 ascent, we climb up to its 2,080 metre summit.
Average speeds over this mountainous region are significantly higher than in the Alps.
Our hotel is nestled alongside the medieval town walls of Sos del Rey Catolico.
With incredible views – and with a drink in hand – we can relax over dinner and reflect on another amazing day.
Day 6 & 7, Wednesday 15th - Thursday 16th September 2027
270 miles, 6.5 hours
After breakfast we continue southwest, over 270 miles of more wide, fast but safe tarmac, with very little traffic.
As we travel further south we observe a rise in the average temperatures, as the landscape becomes more open and arid, with miles of olive trees.
Our destination for the next two nights is the city of Segovia – only 60 miles from Madrid – with its incredible Roman and medieval architecture, including its cathedral, castle, ancient walls, and Roman Aqueduct (itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site) which was the city’s source of water until the 1970s!
The views from our hotel are unforgettable, as we relax with a drink or two and share our best moments of the tour with new friends. Over dinner, the setting sun heralds the hot air balloons, as they slowly drift across the beautiful skyline.
We spend Thursday relaxing at the hotel – enjoying its pool or sauna – or exploring this unique city. Alternatively, Madrid is within easy reach, making it an excellent option for a day trip. Evening dinner will be at a local restaurant in Segovia’s old city centre.
And so tomorrow we start to head back north into the greener, cooler environment of the Palencia Mountains.
Day 8, Friday 17th September 2027
300 miles, 6 hours
Today we say goodbye to Segovia and head north across even more fast, exciting, and deserted roads, through the forests and villages of the Castile region and into the heart of the Palencia Mountains.
We arrive at our hotel at 1,000 metres altitude, with remarkable views over the Fuentes Carrionas Reserve, which is the home of the Cantabrian brown bear.
We can relax on the terrace with a drink in hand and soak up the wonderful atmosphere, before dinner.
Day 9 & 10, Saturday 18th - Sunday 19th September 2027
90 miles, 2 hours
After our final Spanish breakfast we bid farewell to the mountains of Palencia, and drive the short distance into the Basque region and to the port city of Bilbao.
We join our Brittany Ferries early afternoon sailing back to Portsmouth, and look forward to spending our final evening together.
We arrive in Portsmouth late afternoon on Sunday 19th September, having said our goodbyes to a special group of new friends, who we’ve had the most pleasure making some lifetime memories with.
