Scotland’s North Coast 500: the entire route is absorbing, stunning, mysterious even.
The roads are generally excellent – smooth surfaces, well sighted, and luckily virtually traffic free on the sections that you really want to enjoy.
The further north you travel, the more isolated it becomes, with villages miles apart and only Highland cattle and sheep to stare at you and your safe, but swiftly moving convoy.
The hospitality of the people, the drama of the immense landscape, and the long hours of summer daylight, all add to the exhilaration of driving unquestionably some of the very best roads in Europe.

What a wonderful way to get to know your sports car and improve your driving ability, whilst taking in amazing scenery and meeting some great people along the way. This was a well organised and professionally run tour by our hosts Richard and Kevin who were fantastic throughout. The exquisite routes, the roads, the accommodation, food, and new friends, were all excellent. A great opportunity to meet fellow motoring enthusiasts and travel with some amazing cars and their like-minded drivers. This was a big birthday treat for me, and it surpassed all my expectations. I wouldn’t hesitate to highly recommend. We will undoubtedly be back!

Day 1, Thursday 20th May 2027
204 miles, 5 hours
We meet on the Cumbria/Yorkshire Dales border, after an optional overnight stay in Kirkby Stephen.
We journey north, first on some of the High Pennine’s best roads, and over some of the superb roads of the Scottish Borders, to the Jim Clark Motorsport Museum in Duns. After lunch and an optional tour of the museum, we enjoy more of the excellent Borders roads which take us past Edinburgh and to our first hotel in Motherwell, east of Glasgow.
We get to know our fellow drivers and passengers over a sumptuous dinner, as we look forward to the exhilaration of driving some of Europe’s finest roads.
Day 2, Friday 21st May 2027
277 miles, 7 hours
Today we have 277 miles of the some of the most challenging and rewarding of Scotland’s roads.
After breakfast we head north on the Old Military Road, through Perth and the Cairngorm mountains, to our lunch stop at Balmoral Castle.
Our afternoon leg winds us further north over increasingly empty roads, through Inverness and right through the centre of the Highlands. Our hotel in Thurso, located on the most northern coast of the British mainland, has stunning views out towards the Orkney Islands.
You will always remember the warm glow from the setting sun, with a refreshing drink in hand, at the end of a spectacular day’s drive.
Day 3, Saturday 22nd May 2027
136 miles, 5 hours
After breakfast we have half of yesterday’s distance to travel, but we marvel at the constant stunning views of the northwest coast, with white sand beaches and views out over the Atlantic Ocean.
We stop at Ceannabeinne Beach to watch – weather permitting – (and participate if you wish!) the Zipliners enjoy a spectacular ride across the cove, before venturing on to the famous Kylesku Bridge.
Our final leg takes us past Lochinver and Inverkirkaig, to our hotel nestled on the shores of Loch Broom, Ullapool.
Dinner will be at a wonderful harbourside restaurant, specialising in locally caught seafood.
Day 4, Sunday 23rd May 2027
240 miles, 7 hours
We travel through 240 miles of beautiful, rugged terrain; traversing the famous Applecross Pass: the steepest ascent of any road in the UK and with incredible views of the Isle of Skye.
We continue on, overlooked by Highland mountains bordering Loch after Loch, through Fort William, and Glencoe – stopping at the breathtaking location of the famous Aston Martin DB5 scene in James Bond’s Skyfall – to our hotel at Bridge of Orchy.
Evening dinner will be a celebration of a fantastic tour with new friends.
Day 5, Monday 24th May 2027
After a final Scottish breakfast, we head home. You are welcome to join the main convoy south, decide your own pace or indeed your own destination.
Our route takes us along more amazing A roads, past Loch Lomond, around Glasgow and towards the M6 at Carlisle.
We carry home treasured memories of driving our cars across the Scottish wilderness, on – you will surely agree – the very best roads outside of mainland Europe.
